“Pablo Matisse” is the tongue-in-cheek non de plume of artist Dane LaChiusa. The name “Pablo Matisse” describes his stab at moving art forward by recycling archetypes of modernist artists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. The two greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century frequently answered each other and grew exponentially out of a healthy rivalry. Informed by Matisse and Picasso’s commanding influence as leaders of Fauvism, Cubism, Collage, and Neo-Expressionism, Pablo Matisse explores the realm of combining disparate images to suggest a narrative that had not previously been considered.
